Now that we have lived in our house for almost a year, we have a better idea of which spaces are better suited for our families needs. The attic has always left us with a big question mark since the only access to it is through the nursery. We decided even though we can't use it during nap time, it was better to use this space for play rather than storage.
BEFORE
This is one of the only photos we had of the attic when we viewed and purchased our house virtually. When I was growing up, I always wondered how cool it would be to have a functional attic. So when we were finally able to see it in person, I saw all the potential this space could be for the girls!
As I searched for inspiration, and shopped my favourite place (FBMP), my plan started to come together. My budget was very limited so I tried to use as many things we owned and took on the flower petal light as a DIY project. I mean check out this mood board!!
ATTIC MOOD BOARD
TRANSFORMING A SPACE: THE BIG THREE
1. PAINT
Your walls, ceiling and floors are the canvas to your space. So what better way to create a masterpiece than to start with a clean fresh blank page. I'm not saying bright white blank page-but I do prefer to choose a warm earth tone.
So, keeping that in mind we went with a mossy white colour (from our local home hardware). It felt like we made the space a million times better just with the paint. I mean, look how dungeony it looked before!!
2. RUG
Welcome to the 21st century where rugs are now washable and stain resistant! Can I get a hell ya?! Rugs sets the whole tone for your space and patterned rugs are key for high traffic areas. A natural fibre rug can shed so be mindful of that when choosing natural fibres such as wool and jute.
Since the plank boards in the attic are creating texture on the walls and ceiling, we opted for a muted pattern washable rug from the rug collective for a cohesive timeless look. This way, if down the road we change the function of this space, we wont have a need to change the paint or rug!
3. LIGHT FIXTURE
The right light fixture is the difference between drab and fab. Lighting improves the mood and creates a warm hospitable ambiance. And we're all here for the good vibes.
For a while, a track lighting along the centre beam (seen below) would have been the ideal choice for the attic. Since both windows are narrow, natural lighting lacks in this space. I'm still really in love with this Scandinavian design for this space especially with the ceiling being slanted. We may revisit this option in the future (ITS OK TO CHANGE YOUR MIND!)
My brainstorming mind went to work on some dainty and playful lighting ideas. I never thought a pendant light would work but when I put the furniture and play structures in the space I realized the flower petal light I have been eyeing for weeks would be the perfect touch to the playroom! I'm so pleased with how this space is functioning now and the girls actually entertain themselves long enough for me to finish my coffee. Win-win!
